Skycar - Drive and Fly

0 মন্তব্য(গুলি) রবিবার, ২ আগস্ট, ২০০৯
Gilo Cardozo, a self-taught aviation engineer, inventor and founder of British-based Parajet has created a two-seat flying car.The Skycar is powered by a modified 1000cc, four cylinder, 140hp, ethanol burning, Yamaha R1 superbike engine with a lightweight automatic CVT(continuously variable transmission) gear-box.
It has independent four wheel suspension and rear wheel drive. Road acceleration is 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 110 mph.To convert to flight mode, the driver unfolds a parafoil wing from the trunk (boot) and attaches it to the rear of the car. He then flips a switch to change the transmission from road mode, which powers the wheels, to flight mode, which powers the rear fan.Converting from “road mode” to “fly mode” and visa-versa takes about three minutes thanks to the flexible wing technology invented by Mike Campbell Jones, of Paramania Powergliders. The fan’s thrust propels the car forward, providing lift for the wing as the car reaches a takeoff speed of 35 mph. Once airborne, foot pedals move cables attached to the parafoil to direct the flight path. Top air speed is 100 mphat altitudes of 2000 to 3000 feet. Maximum altitude is 15,000 ft. with a range of 180 miles. The Skycar is also equipped with an roof-mounted ballastic parachute for emergencies. In January 2009, an Expedition Team plans to drive/fly the Skycar from London, England to Timbuktu located in the African country of Mali. A total distance of 3700 miles."It’s going to be quite a treacherous trip,” predicts Cardozo. “But that’s all part of a good adventure.”The Skycar will take a 22-mile flight across the English Channel, before landing in France and continuing by road. Then, after a high-altitude flight over the Pyrenees, the Skycar flys across the Strait of Gibraltar to Africa, then through Morocco and across the Sahara desert to Timbuktu.“If the Skycar goes down over water, we risk losing it” says Cardozo. “We’re looking into flotation devices like they use on lifeboats. You attach them to the car and throw them out to stop it from sinking.” The Sahara is also a dangerous environment, not only for it's intense heat and dust - but for criminals.Upon completion of this maiden voyage, Cardozo plans to make a limited production of the Skycar. Potential buyers require a powered parachute license rather than a pilots license and the British government has approved the vehicle as street legal.

A company from Tucson looks forward to develop a high-speed train that would run on solar energy. Currently the project is in idea stage. According to preliminary estimations, the first phase of the project might require $27 billion.

For the first phase the developers have the idea of creating a train system that would link Tucson and Phoenix. As soon as the idea is brought to life, it is planned to expand the system north to Grand Canyon and south to Nogales. The developers expect to activate the train system in 2018.

The idea to build a solar bullet train came to the founders of Tucson-based Solar Bullet LLC, Bill Gaither, retired civil engineer, and his business partner Raymond Wright. They look forward to develop a sun-powered train that would achieve a speed of 220 mph and would run on 4 tracks.

According to Gaither, the inner 2 tracks are going to be used for nonstop journey from Tucson to Phoenix. The remaining tracks are going to serve 6 intermediate stations that will be located in Chandler, Maricopa, Casa Grande, Eloy, Red Rock and Marana.

The solar bullet train will need 110 megawatts of electricity. The power will be produced by solar panels installed overhead. For more information visit: AzStarBiz

Taking advantage of the solar-energy, a new futuristic-looking stadium in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, can generate its own electricity. It is worth mentioning that the stadium has been constructed for the World Games, which are going to take place this July.

This is world's first stadium to use exclusively solar power technology to produce all of its electricity, having 8,844 solar panels installed on its roof. The solar panels will be able to produce the amount of electricity that could power 3,300 lights along with two giant monitors on the stadium.Having the shape of a horse shoe, the huge structure can boast a seating capacity of 55,000. Its developers say that the stadium will be used for athletics and rugby events. After the 2009 World Games, the Taiwanese national football team is going to play its home matches there, reports Daily Mail. The design of the gigantic construction is attributed to Japanese architect Toyo Ito.The somewhat unusual semi-spiral shape was designed with the goal of imitating a dragon and offering a "cordial welcome and a cheerful greeting" to all athletes and viewers with its open-ended structure.

According to a Taiwanese official, the solar panels will be able to produce up to 1.14 million kWh of electricity per year, which means a reduction on annual carbon dioxide emissions by 660 tons.

Lip-Reading Computers Able to Identify Different Languages

0 মন্তব্য(গুলি)
One of the latest inventions created by scientists from the University of East Anglia (UEA) are lip-reading computers that are able to identify different languages.
Scientists managed to come up with lip-reading computers some time earlier but now they created the first computer that can really distinguish different languages. This latest invention could prove to be very useful for people with hearing problems, as well as for law enforcement agencies, and in noisy environments.

The revolutionary research is currently led by Stephen Cox and Jake Newman of UEA's School of Computing Sciences. They will present their latest invention at a major conference that will take place in Taiwan on April 22.

It is worth mentioning that the technology was built up by statistical modeling of the lip movements developed by a team of 23 bilingual and trilingual speakers. The system could distinguish any language with extremely high accuracy. It could identify English, French, German, Arabic, Mandarin, Cantonese, Italian, Polish and Russian, reports the UEA website.

"This is the first scientific confirmation that when people speak different languages, they use different mouth shapes in different sequences," outlined Prof Cox.

"For example, we found frequent 'lip-rounding' among French speakers and more prominent tongue movements among Arabic speakers," he added.

The study was funded by the EPSRC and is a part of a larger project of the University of East Anglia that focuses on automatic lip-reading. Soon scientists will start working on the system closer to an individual's physiology and their way of speaking.

Electronic Pills - Collecting Data Inside The Body

0 মন্তব্য(গুলি)
After years in development, wireless devices contained in swallowable capsules are now reaching the market.
Companies such as SmartPill based in Buffalo, New York and Israel-based Given Imaging (PillCam) market capsules the size of vitamin tablets that contain sensors or tiny cameras that collect information as they travel through the gastrointestinal tract before being excreted from the body a day or two later.

The devices transmit information such as acidity, pressure and temperature levels or images of the esophagus and intestine to your doctor's computer for analysis.

Doctors often use invasive methods such as catheters, endoscopic instruments or radioisotopes for collecting information about the digestive tract. So device companies have been developing easier, less intrusive ways, to gather information.
Digestive diseases and disorders can include symptoms such as acid reflux, bloating, heartburn, abdominal pain, constipation, difficulty swallowing or loss of appetite.

gadgets and new inventions "One of the main challenges is determining just what is happening in the stomach and intestines." says Dr. Anish A. Sheth, Director of the Gastrointestinal Motility Program at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Doctors can inspect the colon and peer into the stomach using endoscopic instruments. But some areas cannot be easily viewed, and finding out how muscles are working can be difficult.

Electronic pills are being used to measure muscle contraction, ease of passage and other factors to reveal information unavailable in the past.
